Pallet calculator/in a 53 ft trailer

How many pallets fit in a 53 ft trailer?

A 53 ft dry van holds 26 standard 48×40 in pallets loaded straight and up to 30 when they are turned. With double stacking that can reach about 52, if the pallets are stackable and stay under the height and weight limits.

With pallets of one size this pattern search gets the floor count right. The EveryLoading optimizer finds the same mixed patterns automatically: 11 EUR pallets in a 20ft container, 25 in a 40ft and 26 industrial pallets in a 13.6 m trailer, and it also handles mixed cargo.

Single layer, from typical inside dimensions. A range means all pallets straight, then the best pattern. The best pattern may leave no play at all, so measure your own vehicle.

  • Straight: 26 pallets

Two pallets across, 48 in along the length, 13 rows. This is what most carriers mean by a full 53 ft load, and it is the easiest pattern to load and unload.

  • Turned: up to 30 pallets

With the 40 in side along the length, 15 rows fit in the roughly 630 in of inside length. This depends on the trailer, so measure the inside length and width before you promise a customer 30.

  • Check the door as well

The rear door opening is usually smaller than the inside, about 94 in wide and 105 in high, so tall or wide freight may stop there even when it fits inside.

Questions and answers

How many 48×40 pallets fit in a 53 ft trailer?
26 straight or up to 30 turned on the floor. Double stacked, 52 straight is the usual figure when the load allows it.
How much weight can a 53 ft trailer carry?
Typically about 42,000 to 45,000 lb of cargo. The exact figure depends on the tractor and trailer weight, because the Interstate limit of 80,000 lb covers the whole vehicle.
What are the inside dimensions of a 53 ft trailer?
About 630 in long, 98 to 100 in wide and 108 to 110 in high, or roughly 16 × 2.5 × 2.75 m. Check the spec sheet of your trailer, because insulation and liners change these figures.
