How many pallets fit in a truck?

A 53 ft dry van takes 26 standard 48×40 in pallets loaded straight, and up to 30 turned. A 13.6 m European trailer takes 33 Euro pallets. A 26 ft box truck takes about 12 standard pallets. Doubling up is possible only when the height and weight allow it.

With pallets of one size this pattern search gets the floor count right. The EveryLoading optimizer finds the same mixed patterns automatically: 11 EUR pallets in a 20ft container, 25 in a 40ft and 26 industrial pallets in a 13.6 m trailer, and it also handles mixed cargo.

Single layer, from typical inside dimensions. A range means all pallets straight, then the best pattern. The best pattern may leave no play at all, so measure your own vehicle.

  • Width decides the pattern

Two 48×40 pallets side by side fit a 100 in wide trailer either way. Turned, each takes 40 in of the length instead of 48, so more rows fit, but the load is harder to pull straight with a forklift.

  • Weight often stops you first

US trucks are limited to 80,000 lb gross on the Interstate, which leaves roughly 44,000 lb of cargo in a typical dry van. Heavy pallets can reach that long before the floor is full, so check the weight as well as the count.

  • Stacking is a separate question

A second tier only works if the pallets are stackable and two loaded pallets clear the inside height. A 53 ft van is about 108 in high inside, so two 54 in pallets is the limit.
